Position: Director, Campus Ministry

Description: Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church (SPC), located in Shepherdstown, West Virginia (70 miles northwest of Washington, DC) is seeking a part-time Director, Campus Ministry with an estimated workload of 200 – 250 hours/year. The position is for the academic year and is renewed annually.

SPC is an inclusive spiritual community, and welcome all who long for meaning, hope, and belonging. Our faith and practice are rooted in the Way of Jesus and are enriched by wisdom from all sources. We are committed to being and becoming a people of radical compassion, working for justice and wholeness in ourselves and in the world. The "core commitments" that guide us are Radical Hospitality, Holistic Spirituality, and Engaged Compassion. 

Connections is the SPC based campus ministry, as well as an official Shepherd University Student Group. Connections is currently designed to encourage the spiritual exploration of college students in a diverse, non-denomination, non-sectarian context. It seeks to build and nurture community and compassion, to provide open and non-judgment space for individual expression, and an oasis of rest from the often over-full experience of college life. 

Connections is also a member of More Light Presbyterians (MLP) the LGBTQIA+ advocacy group within the Presbyterian Church. The ministry is committed to offering a clear, visible progressive faith presence on the Shepherd University campus and to building a spiritual community that welcomes and celebrates all kinds of diversity, with particular outreach to LGBTQIA+ students.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and participate in regular gatherings twice a month, miscellaneous social, education and service events throughout the school year, and an annual trip to the College Conference at Montreat in January each year
  • Sponsor other activities including hikes, kayaking, contemplative walks, movie nights and service opportunities
  • Provide the ministry of presence, hospitality and welcome to member students, prospective students, interested faculty and the campus as a whole
  • Build spiritual community and offer practical ways for student to attend to their own spiritual growth
  • Foster strong ties with SPC and University leadership; prepare and submit reports as required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with minimal guidance
  • Ability to plan, organize and publicize events
  • Ability to communicate effectively—in writing, verbally and via electronic media
  • Strong interpersonal and listening skills
  • Active personal spiritual practice and affiliation with the Christian tradition

Education and Experience:

• College graduate
• Strong background in progressive Christian teaching and practice
• Experience working with youth and/or young adults; some experience working with LGBTQIA+ youth preferred

Salary: Hourly rate of pay, commensurate with experience
